Text Box: Why Use Dogs for SAR?
Scenting dogs have served humans since the time of ancient Greece. A trained trailing dog can follow the steps of someone who passed by several days earlier, discriminate between it and another's trail, and follow it over hills and through marshland. A trained area search dog can enter a large tract of woods, and locate human scent carried on the wind, find the person, and lead the handler in for a rescue. A trained urban search dog can negotiate the rubble left after a disaster, follow the handler's directions at a distance, investigate where a human cannot go, and locate victims that otherwise might not be found. A trained human remains dog can locate a body on land, in water, and under soil or ice.

Who Pays for OSDA Response?
All members of the OSDA are volunteers. Our victims, their families and the local public safety agencies are never charged for OSDA K9 search activities and services. Most equipment, K9 care and training are incurred at the handler's personal expense. Donations help support group training, equipment and travel expenses. We welcome your donations at the address shown on our contact page. OSDA is a 501(c)4 non-profit organization, so donations are tax deductible.  Click here to make a donation on-line.
